Fasting for Fun

I know … we never associate "fasting" with "fun". We tend to think of suffering, agonizing hunger, growling stomachs, irritation, grumpiness, weakness, and dizzy spells. God forbid we should pass out! I agree, fasting doesn't have the best rap but who says fasting is all that brutal?

You don’t have to be a monk to get into the spirit of fasting. If you study the pros and cons a fasting lifestyle becomes the obvious winner.

Ah, but here’s the problem. Once we've convinced ourself of the health benefits how do we occupy ourselves during times we normally eat? How can we live through growling stomachs when skipping breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack times, too? Unbearable thoughts … until we get the right perspective.

Seriously … besides the many health advantages, have you ever figured how much time you spend on preparing meals and eating a day, a month, and a year? How would fasting one day a week affect your lifestyle?

Just think of the additional time you’ll have because you’re not out grocery shopping, preparing food, cooking, and washing dishes. This might be the opportunity to do the things you always wanted to and never found the time to do. It also gives your wallet a break, that's a nice little incentive right there.

Let’s face it - we’re creatures of habit and we’ve created our eating lifestyle. Do you think its possible to squeeze in regular fasting, too?

Since ancient times world religions have been promoting fasting via fear of God. Is that what it takes to realize the benefits and bliss of fasting? I should hope we have enough love and willpower within us to form a healthy body, mind and spirit.

Remember, not only can you heal yourself; you are the only one that can!
